Your store is now agent-callable

🤖 Shopify quietly made every Liquid storefront agent-callable by default on Aug 5. Most merchants don't know this happened, and more!

Hello! You've arrived at What Actually Works 🤓

We break down the real strategies, decisions, and plays that actually move the needle in your marketing, and here it for today.

🤖 Every Shopify Store Just Became Callable by AI Agents, Whether the Owner Opted In or Not

Shopify quietly made every Liquid storefront agent-callable through WebMCP on August 5, according to recent ecommerce platform reporting.

That means an AI agent operating on a shopper's behalf can now directly invoke functions on a standard Shopify storefront, not as an opt-in integration a merchant chose to enable, but as a default capability that arrived with the platform update itself.

A store owner who never heard of WebMCP is very likely already running it.

That's a meaningful shift in what "your storefront" actually means from a technical standpoint.

Up to now, a merchant's relationship with AI shopping agents was mediated by whatever integrations they explicitly set up, giving them a clear sense of what was exposed and what wasn't.

A default, platform-level capability changes that boundary without necessarily changing anyone's mental model of it, and a merchant still picturing their store as something only a human browser interacts with is working from an outdated picture of their own storefront.

Confirm whether your storefront is currently agent-callable, rather than assuming you'd know

A platform-level default doesn't announce itself the way an integration a merchant actively installed would, which means the honest starting point for most sellers is not knowing their current exposure at all.

Check your store's current WebMCP status directly rather than assuming either that you're covered because you haven't touched anything, or that you're safe because you never set anything up.

Neither assumption holds once a capability like this ships as a default. Tracking how your store is actually being discovered across both traditional search and the newer agentic surfaces is what Semrush One is built to surface.

Audit what an agent can actually do once it's calling your storefront directly

Agent-callable doesn't automatically mean unsafe, but it does mean a new category of interaction is happening with your store that wasn't there before, and understanding its actual scope matters more than assuming it's fine by default.

Review what functions are exposed through this capability specifically: product data, pricing, availability, and whether any transactional or account-level functions are reachable the same way. Knowing the actual surface area is the difference between an informed decision and an accidental one.

Treat this as the leading edge of a broader platform pattern, not an isolated change

Shopify making a capability like this a platform default rather than an opt-in signals a direction other ecommerce platforms are likely to follow, meaning storefronts across more platforms are probably heading toward the same default-exposed model over time. You can see how it works here.

The store didn't change. What can reach it directly, without you deciding to let it, did.
