Your Post Purchase Survey Has a Bias
đ€Your post-purchase survey has a bias nobody corrects for, and more!

Hello! You've arrived at What Actually Works đ€
We break down the real strategies, decisions, and plays that actually move the needle in your marketing, and here it for today.
đ€ Your Post-Purchase Survey Has a Bias
Post-purchase surveys solved one problem remarkably well: click attribution often gives too much credit to the last measurable interaction before conversion. Asking customers directly introduced a valuable human layer that many attribution models were missing.
The assumption that followed was much more dangerous.
If the customer said it, it must be true. Memory doesnât work that way.
People remember moments that demanded conscious attention. They rarely remember the influences that quietly shaped a decision over days or weeks.
A Google search is memorable because it requires intent. A recommendation from a friend stands out because it involves a conversation. A billboard seen on the commute, a podcast ad playing in the background, or the tenth Instagram impression rarely forms a memory strong enough to survive until checkout, even if it contributed to the purchase.
That means your survey isnât just collecting attribution.
Itâs collecting attributable memory.
Those are not the same thing.
1. Split channels into memory-active and memory-passive.
Before reading another survey, classify every acquisition channel. This doesnât tell you which channels perform better. It tells you which channels customers are naturally more likely to remember.

2. Calculate a Memory Gap.
Donât compare survey responses directly with spend. Compare them with independent measurements.
Run a geo holdout, lift test, or incrementality study on one memory-passive channel. Then compare the measured incremental contribution with the percentage of customers who mentioned that same channel in surveys.
Memory Gap = Measured Incremental Lift Ă· Survey Attribution
If surveys credit podcasts with 4% of purchases but the lift test suggests 10%, youâve identified a systematic under-reporting pattern that should influence future budget discussions.
3. Stop treating every survey answer equally.
Instead of asking, âWhich channel won?â, ask two questions.
- Was this channel memorable?
- Was this channel measurable somewhere else?
When survey responses and independent measurements agree, confidence increases.
When they diverge, investigate before reallocating the budget.
4. Build an Attribution Confidence Score.
Rank every channel using three inputs instead of one.

The exact weights will vary by business. The principle doesnât.
No attribution method is objective enough to deserve complete trust on its own.
The strongest decisions come from understanding how each measurement system is biased before combining them.
The goal isnât to find a perfect attribution model. Itâs to stop confusing what customers remember with what actually changed their behavior.
Partnership with Stack Influence
This Channel Turned a Sunscreen Brand's #42K Amazon Ranking Into a Bestseller in 4 Months

Naked Sunday had a decent SPF product buried on page 4. So they stopped bidding and started seeding, sending free product to micro-influencers with no cash changing hands.
Four months later, monthly units went from 131 to over 1,300, rank jumped 2.4x, and 252 creators pushed 1.4M impressions, with a 22% testimonial rate still fueling the listing today.
Stack Influence runs this exact motion. Their AI matches your brand with creators from a network of 11M+ micro-influencers, and you simply pay them only with your products, so every dollar maps to a real purchase and a real piece of content.
- Lenny & Larry's seeded 1,560 creators for 11x monthly sales
- Blueland grew Amazon sales 372% with a 6.3x rank lift
- Dreamland Baby turned one campaign into $150K from a standing start
Now you can run the same motion and save 10% on your first campaign if you sign up this week.
