AI Doesn’t account for past wins

⏳ AI systems weight how recently a source discussed you over how big you used to be. Authority now has a shelf life.

Hello! You've arrived at What Actually Works 🤓

We break down the real strategies, decisions, and plays that actually move the needle in your marketing, and here it for today.

⏳ AI Doesn't Care How Big You Used to Be

Two years ago the press hits landed, the reviews rolled in, the mentions stacked up. Then it went quiet. The assumption is that old authority still does its job in the background. It doesn't. AI doesn't grade on career highlights.

AI visibility weighs how recently a source talked about you far more than how much total volume exists in your history, so a once-loud brand can read as smaller than it actually is, while a smaller brand that's simply active right now can read as the bigger player. A decade of SEO habit trained everyone to expect authority that compounds and defends itself. Entity visibility in AI answers does the opposite. It decays, quietly, starting the moment nobody's watching.

MYTH: your old press coverage is still carrying weight REALITY: eighteen-month-old coverage, an unrefreshed review cycle, a listing nobody's touched since your last rebrand, these are the sources currently telling AI systems who you are, and they're describing a version of your business that may not exist anymore. FIX: pull whatever sources are currently feeding AI descriptions of your brand and sort them by publish date, not prominence. The fix was never more coverage. It's newer coverage pushing the stale stuff out of the frame.

MYTH: one strong corroboration push covers you REALITY: get press, get reviews, get listed, move on, that's the standard sprint, and it decays exactly like everything else, just on a delay nobody's tracking. FIX: set a standing quarterly cadence instead: a refreshed review response, a current press mention, a listing rechecked against where the brand stands today. The target isn't volume, it's keeping the newest thing said about you inside a few months, always, which is what tracking your citations across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, and Google AI Mode in one pass is for. Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit does exactly that, and it's free to try for 7 days.

MYTH: an old positive mention can only help REALITY: a two-year-old article praising a product line you discontinued last spring isn't neutral, it's actively wrong, and it's teaching an AI system to describe something that doesn't exist anymore. FIX: audit existing citations for which ones are stale enough to be actively misleading, not just outdated, before crediting any of them with doing you any good.

Authority used to compound like interest. Now it has an expiration date, and the clock started before most teams noticed it was running.

The 3-Step Playbook for Winning BFCM Before October

By October, CPMs can already be 20–60% higher. Brands that win BFCM build their creator roster in September, while costs are lower and there's still time to find proven winners.

Here’s the playbook:

  1. Seed now so creators know the product before November. Seed in Aug-Sep and flag organic winners early, since 81% of BFCM collaborations involve repeat creators.
  2. Source modular UGC with flexible hooks and raw footage. Refresh fatigued ads without funding another shoot.
  3. Run proven creators across organic and paid. Put winning content behind the creator’s handle to carry existing trust into each impression.

Bonus: Connect Ads Manager to Insense’s performance dashboard to identify the creators driving performance, then rehire them before availability tightens.

Insense helps DTC brands scaling beyond $2M build repeat creator rosters and is trusted by Il Makiage, Quince, Huda Beauty, and Monster Energy.

Book a free strategy call by September 11 to map creator availability in your niche and get $200 toward your first campaign.
