Your invisible second language
🔗Google is handing language matching to AI, and your brand may already be absent where customers actually research, and more!

Hello! You've arrived at What Actually Works 🤓
We break down the real strategies, decisions, and plays that actually move the needle in your marketing, and here it for today.
🌐 The second language nobody on your team is checking
Google confirmed this month that campaign-level language targeting disappears from Search and AI Max for Search campaigns in late September, with Performance Max affected on Google Search inventory. Language matching moves to the creative and landing page, plus Google's own read on what languages a user understands.
Buried in the clarifications was a detail worth sitting with. Google confirmed an English-language query can serve a French ad, if its systems determine the user understands French and its prioritization picks that creative. The query language and the ad language no longer have to match.
That is a paid-media change. It also describes something that has already been true on the organic side of AI answers, and almost nobody is measuring it.
Run your category prompts in your customers' second language
Take the ten questions that drive your category and run them again in Spanish, French, or whichever language a meaningful share of your customers actually speak at home.
Compare the cited domains against your English results. In practice the overlap is often thin, because the local-language answer set draws from local publishers, local forums and local review sites that never appear in your English visibility reporting. A brand that is well cited in English can be functionally absent in a language its customers use to research purchases.
Check whether your localized pages are answers or just translations
Translated marketing pages rarely function as answer sources. They carry the same structure as the English original, which means they inherit whatever made the original hard to quote.
Audit your localized pages on one question: does the page answer a specific question completely, in idiomatic language, without requiring another click? Machine-translated copy tends to fail this even when it reads acceptably, because it preserves English sentence structure that models handle poorly as extractable text.
Tracking that gap per engine and per language is where Semrush AI Visibility earns its place, since visibility in one engine tells you very little about another. You can try free for 7 days.
Audit your creative language inventory before late September
The paid change lands in weeks, and creative language becomes the matching signal.
Three things to have settled first:
- A complete inventory of which languages you currently have live creative in, by campaign
- A decision on whether any language is one you do not want serving, since exclusions are still not supported
- A landing page in every language you have creative in, because the page is part of the match
The language setting was a control. What replaces it is an inference, and inferences are worth auditing before they start spending your budget.
