The spam trigger killing BFCM

🧮 The same spam threshold gets far easier to trip at BFCM volume. Know your number before peak week starts, and more!

Hello! You've arrived at What Actually Works 🤓

We break down the real strategies, decisions, and plays that actually move the needle in your marketing, and here it for today.

🧮 The complaint math that changes completely in November

Gmail and Yahoo enforce a spam complaint threshold of 0.3%, with Google recommending 0.1% as the real safety margin, not the point where enforcement starts.

At a normal month's volume, that threshold feels comfortable. At BFCM volume, it becomes a much smaller number of complaints away from tripping.

A sender delivering 10,000 emails a month needs 30 spam reports to hit 0.3%. A brand earning 30% or more of annual orders in six weeks, roughly one in six ecommerce brands, might send that same 10,000 in a single day during peak.

The complaint count that crosses the line doesn't change. How fast you reach it does.

Calculate your actual complaint budget for peak week

Take your average daily send volume in a normal month against your projected BFCM volume. That ratio is roughly how much your margin for error shrinks, even though the percentage threshold stays fixed.

It's the same math one agency ran before deciding a pre-BFCM switch to Omnisend was worth the risk, landing $113K in holiday revenue on the new platform, matching the year before. You can read the full story.

If normal-month sending gives a comfortable buffer against 0.3%, peak-week sending at three or four times the volume burns through that buffer in a fraction of the time. Know the number before the week starts, not after deliverability drops mid-sale.

Make unsubscribe friction the first thing you fix

One-click unsubscribe, the RFC 8058 standard Gmail and Yahoo both require, exists because a user who can't easily opt out clicks Report Spam instead. A spam report costs reputation. An unsubscribe costs a list entry. Not the same price.

Audit whether your platform implements true one-click unsubscribe, the List-Unsubscribe-Post header that lets Gmail surface a native button, not just a footer link requiring a second confirmation page.

The second version pushes frustrated recipients toward the spam button exactly when your complaint budget is tightest.

Segment your BFCM sends around complaint risk, not just conversion

The segments most likely to convert during peak, deep discount hunters and win-back targets, often overlap heavily with the segments most likely to complain if frequency ramps too fast.

Build a peak-week cadence that increases frequency gradually for engaged segments while holding cold segments steady or excluding them from the highest-frequency sends.

The threshold doesn't move for BFCM. Everything upstream of it does.

Partnership with Levanta

Your Best Holiday Creators Are Choosing Brands Now

Holiday performance is often decided before the promotion goes live. Creators commit to brands offering attractive economics and strong audience fit, so delayed outreach leaves your team competing for whatever attention remains.

Levanta built The 90-Day Holiday Sprint to turn that shrinking window into measurable momentum. Inside, you’ll learn how to:

  • Set commissions around customer lifetime value, protecting margin while attracting stronger partners.
  • Recruit with proven products that give creators better conversion potential.
  • Use 30, 60, and 90-day checkpoints to identify winning relationships before seasonal budgets rise.

A 90-day runway gives you time to see which creators convert before holiday budgets climb. That evidence makes every commission increase easier to defend.

Don’t wait until November to build the creator program you will wish you already had. Your 90-day countdown starts now.
